Takes a few uses to start getting consistent results. First, put a drop of oil in the hinge. Friction is what gives unreliable results. Still, tool is best suited for giving relative tension between spokes rather than an absolute measurement of tension of each spoke It is enough.

First problem, I bought the red one thinking it might be easier so spot in my cluttered shop. And I like red. Black would have been easier to read due to better contrast between the background color and the scale marks. But beyond that, the scale marks are background color lines bounded by white boxes. It's a very cluttered scale. There are other, similar gages at this price point with much clearer scales. Beyond that, it's adequate and a good value for home users and occasional wheelbuiders. Pros should get something more sophisticated. Side note, I think it can also be used as a bandsaw tensiometer, if you can come up with a calibration method.

Wow, I didn’t even know about this tool until doing some research when a couple spoke on my bike broke. There are lots of different ones out there but none that work this good at this price point. Great for the casual cyclist who is doing some of their own bike maintenance. Great value!

first off- I bought this when it somehow was deeply discounted well below the 20-ish dollar range it is now at. However it still is worth the 20ish. I have owned and used a Park Tool TM-1 for years. However i wanted something that I was less worried about just to carry outside the normal workshop for quick tension comparison checks. Additionally i have not calibrated my Park in a while. WHY I LIKE THIS and why i gave it a good rating- A) it is well constructed, and the two plates do not have a binding point like my Park does (and I have seen others comment on) B) it functions as well or better as any other similar tool. C) it can be used for checking average spoke tension as well (and quite cheaply) as any more expensive tool, which is generally your biggest concern. you really just use this to make sure that all spokes on one side of a wheel are all fairly evenly tensioned. It is a great comparison tool.-- THE CAVEATS- A) absolute calibration as arrived is likely off- using the chart and comparing the readings of this to my TM-1 this is about 20 kgf off. however if you are using it just to even up /compare tension it isn't that big of a deal. Or you can also calibrate it- several methods can be used, and it is only a single calibration screw. I suspect it can be calibrated to match the numbers of my Park ( after I calibrate it).Bottom line- for what it is at the price you pay, it is worth the money. If you are building wheels professionally this shouldn't be what you are using to begin with. but for basic home repairs where you find loose spokes and want to use more than the "pluck test" this is fine. If it had come correctly calibrated I would say t is better than the TM-1.

This meter feels very solid. It is very useful for spoke tension adjustment. It becomes much easier to identify the one or two spokes whose tensions are outliers.

I can't attest to it's accuracy due to not having a tool to check it against, but this will enable you to ensure that all the spokes are relatively near the same tension. If you have a way to check the tension, that will determine it's accuracy and then you can adjust it if it's not accurate.

The spoke tension meter works great. I use it to check the spoke tensions of my front and rear wheels. I use it to confirm the tension is consistent among the spokes.
