Celestron’s Astromaster 90AZ refractor telescope is a good choice for anyone who wants a dual purpose telescope. With more than double the light gathering power of 60mm starter scopes, it’s a great introduction to astronomy and it can double as a long range spotting scope. Bigger and more impressive than it looks in pictures, the Astromaster 90AZ is an adult size telescope that stands nearly five feet high and weighs about 20 pounds. With it’s fully illustrated quick set up guide, the telescope is easy to assemble, and the package includes an erect image prism, high and low power eyepieces, and astronomy software for your PC.

Refractors are known for their crisp, high contrast views of the Moon and planets and the Astromaster 90 delivers sharp views right out of the box. The low power 20mm eyepiece (50X magnification) nicely frames the moon, while the high power 10mm eyepiece (100X magnification) delivers a crisp close up image full of detail. The sharp Achromatic optics of the Astromaster 90AZ show me memorable views night after night. On a moonless night I like the way the 20mm eyepiece frames the ghostly glow of the Orion Nebula. Zooming in with the 10mm eyepiece, I can easily pick out all four stars of the Orion Nebula’s embedded quadruple star the Trapezium.

The AstroMaster 90 AZ also features a newly designed Alt-Azimuth mount and tripod. The tripod comes fully assembled, and the telescope simply clamps into a standard dovetail. This new tripod seems reasonably solid, I had no trouble focusing on the Moon and stars even with the high power eyepiece. An Alt-azimuth mount, of course, is best used at low to medium powers because it does not track the motion of the stars. As soon as you get the Moon centered in the eyepiece, it starts drifting toward the edge-this is caused by rotation of the Earth. Celestial objects will stay in the low power field of view for three or four minutes, but with a high power eyepiece they may disappear in a minute or less.

Celestron’s AstroMaster 90 AZ is one entry level telescope that offers great views during the daytime as well as at night. The sharp optics produce a right side up image, the mount is easy to use, and the included planetarium software helps you find planets in the night sky. --Jeff Phillips

Buen telescopio para observacion terrestre y observacion de la luna y planetas, al ser montura altazimutal se pierden facil los planetas si le pones mucho aumento.

I purchased this telescope for my grandson. Although he is still young, I wanted a telescope with enough power to allow him to see planets as well as just the moon. This telescope met that desire. The included spotter scope is very helpful. I was surprised and happy to see how sturdy and well-built the included tripod was. Instructions were easy to follow and we were ready to begin viewing in no time. The unit comes with a phone attachment and an app for your phone that will assist in helping you locate various celestial bodies. I also purchase an optional moon filter. Great telescope for a young person. I would highly recommend.

Originally given 2 stars. I had high hopes for this telescope after weeks of researching different types of telescopes and different brands. This one was supposed to be fairly decent. However, the red dot view finder did not work out of the box which makes the telescope difficult to sight in. The red dot view finder feels very cheaply made and plastic-y. Will return and hopefully will have better look with the next one.Update: 4 stars. Contacted Celestron regarding red dot view finder. Great customer service. Replacement for the finderscope was sent immediately. This new one seems to be better quality than the original. Very pleased with this company and with this telescope.

I love this telescope. It’s easy to use and gets some great images. I can even see Saturn with the 10mm lens included. So cool!

This was a Christmas gift for my 9 year old daughter. It’s a little big for her, but the telescope is something that the whole family can enjoy together. We have especially enjoyed looking at our moon and the moons of Jupiter. I am very glad that we did not get the equatorial mount version, as that would have been way too complicated for our kids.

I recently returned this telescope. There was what looked like a factory mis-assembly and it did not work. I ordered the same scope from a telescope store and am quite satisfied with the product. But, unpacking the new scope it was clear that the original had been PREVIOUSLY OPENED/attempted used and there were also ITEMS MISSING in addition to the fact that it must have been returned as broken in the first place.

This is a decent entry level telescope - so far I can easily zoom in on the moon & features & Jupiter (& 4 moons) - pretty cool.Tripod is a little low (& I'm only 5'4") & not the sturdiness. Hard to keep from moving.Red light Finder works but a little hard to line up & keep aligned (could be the tripod). The telescope is very long - about 38" which makes taking it along a challenge. I recently went on a houseboat trip & it wasn't the easy thing to tote - but still glad I took it along.Next: focus and photography Jupiter & Saturn. I can see me upgrading this telescope sooner than I thought.

Great for beginners and the red dot/laser sight really helps you focus on your area of interest. I agree the stand is very difficult to “fine tune” and I often have to adjust to above the star/moon and then allow for it to “fall” into view - not very precise and can be frustrating for distant areas of interestThe moon is AMAZING and I could look at the craters all night - but even Jupiter today was basically a bright star with four bright star/moons and no other detailsIf i was buying a starter telescope again, I would invest in higher power

So I think the telescope portion of this product is decent, especially for beginners. I did not expect this to work out of the box with the snap of a finger. It's a fragile product with lots of sensitive pieces, so getting started, set-up and running took a bit time and getting used to. But the effort is well worth it.However, where this thing really underdelivers is the stand/tripod. Mine is either busted, used or simply not up to the task. I have read some other reviews that indicate that this stand simply is the weak point of the product. Adjustments are too clunky and the slightest touch from anything brings the setup out of alignment. Mine also seemed to have a bad movement system as the film that I believe was supposed to between some inner pieces of the movement reached out of the movement and made the adjustments even tougher.I had to revert to an alternate tripod I had available for my photography purposes, which was much better suited and actually functional. But at this price I expect something working. The telescope itself is good I guess, once you get the object in scope. Finetune the finder at daytime, not at night when you want to focus on actual viewing. It comes with two lenses (?) and they offer a decent different range for different types of objects.I believe to have had a good look at saturn, but let's be honest: Do still not expect more than a look at a bright shiny round white object.Where this shines is getting a better look at the moon. Set that at your goal and you'll be happy with what you got.But as mentioned above, be ready to invest in a different tripod that can be adjusted on three axis or have something available already.

There is nothing wrong with the telescope itself. The tripod, on the other hand, is absolute garbage. Even with tightening the appropriate components, at acute angles, it drifts. As you try to tighten and lock the telescope in place, the scope will move from the location you initially set. The leg joints at the top of the tripod are plastic, set with a single metal bolt. Part of the reason for the drifting/difficulty in setting a specific position is that there is significant give in the plastic. In short, if you loosen the tripod, find a target, then tighten, the telescope will move as you tighten. If you keep the tripod somewhat tight and move it around, keeping the tripod in a specific location is difficult due to the give in the plastic leg joints.

I have always been interested in space and astronomy but it had never occurred to me to purchase a telescope until recently. I always thought they were for professionals until now but after some time spent researching, I decided to buy one. Though I'm just an amateur and still learning about astronomy, I found the Celestron telescope really easy to set up and use. The instructions are easy to follow and it only took me around 15 minutes to assemble. In the box you get two lenses, a scope cover, tripod and accessory tray. There is also a red dot sight mounted next to the eyepiece which you can use when aiming the telescope. A battery is included for this. The legs have some dove tail screws on them which can be used to adjust the height as needed. I have used the telescope several times since purchase and I am amazed by the quality of what you can see on a clear night. With the help of the internet and some astronomy books, I have been already been able to a far away star, the planet Mars and of course the moon. I quickly realised though, that to gain maximum benefit from this telescope you will need as a minimum a moon filter (the moon is too bright without one) and a barlow lens (which increases magnification). Once I had purchased these additional accessories, I got a lot more out of the telescope. A minor point of criticism for the Celestron is that the handle used to move the telescope left/right/up/down is a little short making precise movements difficult. And when you do see your target in the scope, making small adjustments can be annoying as the scope tends to "bounce back" slightly. Larger movements aren't an issue. That said, for my purposes I am really happy with this product. For the price, I didn't expect a high-end professional telescope but what I got is very good indeed and has provided me with hours of fascination. If you're a beginner interested in the night sky, I would definitely recommend this telescope.
