Until recent protection bans were enacted, Mongoose hair brushes were a long time favorite workhorse brush of the oil painter. Mongoose was thirsty and supple enough to absorb and lay down large quantities of glaze, but had the durable strength to manage heavy bodied paints with ease and mastery, with a hair texture evenly between hog and sable.
We enlisted the help of a world-class German brush maker after the ban was enacted to develop a brush with the superb qualities of natural mongoose. It became a passion and a true labor of love to create the perfect brush, tirelessly testing multiple prototypes, tweaking and correcting each time. When testing the resulting line of brushes developed with a stable of well-known professional painters, all feedback was incredibly positive, and created an air of excitement among them! Most believed it not only matched but actually improved on natural Mongoose, providing better heft, absorbency, and shaping of the bristles.
Hamburg Premier Professional Brushes feature: Brights, Filberts and Rounds. Created from a strategic proprietary blend of natural and synthetic blended multi-filament sizes of hair. The blend harmoniously matches the strength and resilience of Mongoose! Our proprietary, carefully balanced blend of both multiple diameter synthetic filaments and natural hair varieties produced more reliable pointing and cleaner brush edges than Mongoose had been able to provide, while being absorbent and durable. Brush bellies trap more thinned paint and glazes with this formulation, allowing for glazing while maintaining detailed precision. The balanced blend, just like Mongoose, provides the hair strength to paint with heavy bodied paint for more impasto applications.Yet, unlike mongoose, cleans easier and more completely due in part to the synthetic filament content, easily coming back to shape for the next painting session.
"I initially used the brushes while painting on the smooth surface of the AlumaComp and later on a commissioned canvas piece I was painting. I found it to be quite a versatile brush for both. It has precisely the right amount of softness to be effective on a smooth surface yet the stiffness to push paint around on canvas. Badger hairs are traditionally used in more high-end shaving brushes. The bristle is more of a coarse hair but on the smoother side of the spectrum. I found that using them from my blending work on canvas was a completely different experience.
