Works well and very solid plastic. It shapes out the knock out for the latch and strike plate. I found it was amazing for this function but it doesn’t serve a whole lot of other function so using a wood chipper tool was about the same. This keep the size perfect and on target for depth, so it works well. I highly recommend this but if you’re good with a wood chipper this might not be necessary. I love it and will definitely be using it again because it’s solid and will last a lifetime.

So this thing is really really cool it's not technically a jig but that's what I keep referring to it as but it's a door jig for cutting out that little depression in the side of the door where the strike plate for the bolt latch rests.Seems to do a pretty decent job, once your hole is drilled and you're ready to install the latch/strike plates, you just line the peg on the end of The jig up into the drilled hole and then give it a whack with a hammer, once you've got the outline cut you use the cutting blade on the side of the jig lying its edge up in the top edge of the outline that you've made and then just gently tap tap tap with a hammer until you got it cut out. The only thing I didn't care for and you can see it's the highlighted portion in the third picture but in the middle where the seam is at the point the two ends of the blade come together there is a little bit of slipping when they tacked it into place there and the one side / corner sticks up a bit over the other one which really I supposed doesn't matter cuz you're just knocking a hole into a piece of wood anyway and then the cut edge is going to be filled in with a piece of metal so there's a little divot or one spot tiny bit deeper it doesn't really matter that just prefer symmetry in a product. Then in the second picture you can see a couple places I've highlighted and I wanted to point out that it looks like it has a rough edge it does not that is the paint job it just makes it look that way I ran my finger acrossed it my fingernail even another piece of thin metal there's no roughness or resistance it just appears that way there's a tiny bit of flaking on the edge from the metal making it look a bit rough but it is notDefinitely a very handy very useful little tool absolutely beats the heck out of trying to do the same job with a screwdriver or chisel and a hammer.

I’m a woodworker and have many specialized tools so I figured I would give this one a try. Since I wasn’t installing a door at the moment, I used a spare piece of pine 2x4. It took a bit of pounding with both a large ball peen and a dead blow hammer to achieve the 5/32” depth required - that was with the wood clamped in a vise where I could really rail on it - would be more challenging on a hung door. Looks like it would be a good idea to tape the surrounding area to help minimize splitting. While the tool did make a sort of opening of the right size, it was a bit rough. I might see using this to stamp an outline for a chisel - or just use a router guide…with a router.

Mortising a door to install a latch is one of the trickiest skills to master. Precision is essential, since the door and frame hardware all have to line up perfectly. A chisel isn't a precision tool, so having a jig like this is a big help, Although the jig is made of plastic, it's solid and durable. It fits standard wooden door thicknesses, so it's good for new replacement doors but might not be suitable if your house is older and has doors that aren't standard dimensions.I followed the instructions carefully and was able to do a nice clean lock installation. If only they had a tool for the striker plate side that worked as well!

First off, I'm very impressed with how heavy and solid it feels for the price. And it does cut a nice door latch mortise quickly and relatively simply. The fitment of the plug that centers the mortise on the latch hole is perfect and makes it really easy to line up the mortise outline. As for overall function though, the cutting implements are pretty dull, which means you will either need to file them to get the sharper or use a LOT of force to make them cut. Luckily the cutting implements are held in place by Phillips head screws, so they can be removed for sharpening, and once they are sharp they cut way better and make a really nice mortise. The only other minor issue is that once it's sharpened it's pretty easy for the cutter on the side to wander out of the outline if you're not very careful when using it. The instructions are also not very detailed or clear. It is pretty simple though. You simply align the outline of the mortiser centered on the door using the latch hole plug to position it, a few quick taps with a hammer until it stops sinking in will set the outline. Then you turn it sideways and use the depthing tool starting about ¼ of the way down the outline, center it on the outline and tap it with the hammer making sure that it sinks in till the body of the tool is flush with the door edge, tap it all the way down to the end of the outline, then turn it around, go back the other way to the opposite end, and the job is done.Ultimately with a very simple sharpening of the blades and careful use it does work pretty well, and feels like it will last quite a long time if you take good care of it and resharpen it on occasion as needed. As always if I encounter any other issues or think of anything else to add I'll update this review!

I used this mortise tool to install several door latches during a home renovation, and it worked perfectly. It’s easy to adjust and saves a lot of time compared to chiseling by hand. The cuts were clean and accurate, and it really helped me get professional-looking results. Sturdy build, simple to use, and a great value for the price. Highly recommended for both DIYers and pros.
