I have wondered about many of my antique dishes. Now I can test them.

My granddaughter had a blood test that came back positive for lead - super scary! I got this lead test kit for my son to check to see if there was the presence of lead in the home. Luckily, the blood test results were a false-positive but he decided to check some of the areas in the home just in case. The swabs come in a resealable package so they stay fresh for up to two years. The testing was easy to do - just dip the swab in water, shake off the excess water, rub the swab on the item that you are testing. He checked it first on a weld joint that was made with lead and it detected the lead very quickly. He then went around the house and used about half the swabs, checking for lead on toys, paint, etc. The swabs provided accurate results of no lead and he was very happy about that. This test kit is a great value and ensures peace of mind. It works so quickly and it's great that you don't need to send something to a lab to get results.

I tried these swabs over some items I was definitely hoping were lead free like my mouse and a Stanley insulated cup, then moved to items I suspected might indicate some lead, like a vintage Polish leaded crystal rocks glass. Finally, as a control, I swabbed a lead lined container used to shield radiation rods. I saw no change on any of the previous tests, and if I squinted, I could maybe see a slight color difference after swabbing raw lead. I anticipated a more stark contrast, so I'm not certain I would use these to indicate risk of lead exposure. Maybe it's a bad batch, but I'm not convinced these work.

Not sure if I got a faulty kit or not but they didn’t work. I followed the instructions and tested on the known area that has lead but none of those swaps can detect lead. Other brands worked at that same area.

Instructions could not be clearer nor simpler. Straight forward and easy to follow. I used the swabs to test 2 bowls that I have had for some time but was always suspicious of. Happily, each came back negative for lead. So then I used a swab on some 50/50 soldering wire to prove to myself that it works, and it changed color, showing the presence of lead. Photo attached. The swabs are contained in a pouch that seals back up to retain freshness. The expiration date is a full 2 years away.

Totally worth buying, these really work! It took quite a while to finally find something in my home that contained lead to be sure these really work.To use, just dip in water for a couple of seconds, shake it off, then rub it on whatever you want to test. It only takes a few seconds for the color to start changing if there is a significant amount. I recommend doing the full 15-20 seconds though because I did find a metal belt I had turned the tester very slightly pink after 15 seconds. This contains 20 testers in a resealable bag. From my experience, you can reuse the same one for a few minutes on many different things before the reaction weakens and the color loses vibrancy.

This test failed to detect lead. First, I tried it on the front of an N100 face mask that had been exposed to lead fumes, but it did not register anything. This was discouraging, so I conducted a definitive test—I rubbed the swab directly on a lead ingot. There was no change in color, tint, or shade—nothing at all. To verify, I repeated the test using a different kit, and that one worked. And yes, I carefully followed the instructions. This test kit does not work—don't waste your money.

I followed the instructions and this product did not detect lead in cracked ceramic known to contain 600 ppm lead, which should have changed the swab's color according to the product packaging. I also exposed the swab to a lead nitrate "verification card" that came with another brand's lead test kit and the swab did not change color either when rubbed according to the instructions or when a drop of the solution was squeezed out onto the card. I confirmed that the verification card worked with the other brand's test solution.
