Wife and I bought this to start bouldering a bit. Mostly in joshua tree, we’ve had it a while but only used it on 4-5 trips so far, it’s bulky but I don’t mind the size, it molds to the ground nicely. The one big con we are having with it is that the stitching is coming undone and it keep leaking the foam. A real pain in the ass when try to leave no trace. Wife has stitched up 2 separate holes the developed. Not sure what’s up, otherwise it’s seems like a good pad.Added a pic, you can see a new hole forming and an old hole my wife is stitching.

The inside of the pad is small plastic particles, so you can't unzip the cover and throw it in the washing machine without having thousands of tiny pieces of plastic everywhere.Good pad, but I wish it was designed to be more easily washable.

I bought this a while back and now that I've used it for about a year I have reached a final verdict. Its a beast!Start off with the cons:weight 20lbs, it is heavy but if you are used to backpacking it will be very easy. I would suggest this to intermediate to advanced climbers just due to the strength and endurance you'll have at that level. Now for the pros:Protection: it is wonderful. It confirms to the ground very well. This is due to the fact that they have a vertical tube a layout for the foam. The chest straps are also protected with a rollout tarp that Velcro to the pad itself.Space: there is a secret pocket on it for snacks. I always forget about them but when I'm really hungry I remember it. You can also stuff gear bags into it as well, this will add to the weight though which should be expected. They also have 2 gear loops running vertically on the backside and on the chest straps as well.Support: the chest straps are similar to most backpacking packs or day packs. They have a horizontal chest strap and hip straps as well. Great for support. Do adjust everything though. My friend put it on with it for to my body and she was complaining the entire time.I absolutely love this pad. If you are looking for something a bit lighter though look elsewhere. Great for trips with a short approach, or with a friend that has ungodly endurance.

I haven't had the chance to acctualy get out and try the pad out yet but I'm very happy with the purchase. It seems to be a very durable pad. I should say this is my first and the reason I chose this pad was because you're going to need a pad that can conform to your landing zone. This will do the job and will protect your body from the rocks. I'm loving the color of it as well. This thing is super easy to roll up and get it on your back to hit the boulders. the straps are awesome and you can pack a ton of gear in here without feeling like your carrying a brick. The ribbed sections are interesting and you could potentially roll an ankle if it landed wrong but with any pad you have that risk. It's a bit hard out of the box but just take the time to jump on it. It's going to take a beating so you might as well test it out right? All in all I love this pad and the price is right on! Wish amazon price matched but oh well they have great service!

The R3 makes an excellent crash pad and excels at protecting uneven landings. It covers are large area and all my landings have been comfortable thus far.The only reason I do not give it 5 stars is that it is bulky and heavy. Not unmanageable at all. The shoulder harness is much better than I have had on any other pad. Once you have the pad on your shoulders it feels like a much smaller and lighter pad.No hesitation in recommending this pad.

I love this pad. There are a lot of problems that may get skipped because the landings are sketchy, but with this pad, it molds itself very well to rocky and uneven ground. Even alone it is enough to cover most falls.Yes, it is quite heavy, but it isn't unbearable. It'll hold your gear well on long treks out and the support straps are very solid. There is a little flap that covers the straps for when you put the pad on the ground that help to keep the straps clean which is a nice detail. The baffles are not uncomfortable to land on even from a distance up. I have not experienced any ankle rolling or even thought that was going to be an issue.Overall, an excellent first pad for the eager outdoor beginner and a must have for everyone's collection.

This is a great all around crash pad! As everyone else says, it is heavier, but it's definitely worth the extra weight. It provides a very soft landing, even from higher falls. I had a friend who landed from 12 feet up (foot height) and never felt the ground! I've personally landed on it from 8 feet up (also foot height), and was surprised at how soft the landing was. The straps are for the most part comfortable, and the storage in it is vast and great to have. The only problem I had with it, was that one of the threads broke at the edge of one of the baffles the second time using it but hasn't unthreaded. Aside from that, the durability and quality is very good. It also makes for a comfortable sleeping pad at night! If you're looking at any pads around $150, save the extra few bucks and go with the R3! You won't regret it.
