I've seen these in stores and always wanted one. This is perfect to keep in the garage and have on hand so you know exactly what hardware you're needing for your projects!

This pilot hole gauge is well-made and solidly built overall. The one thing that could be improved as far as build quality is that the edges could have been made smoother, since they feel rather rough, not sharp as if you’re going to cut your finger, but basically not quite “finished”. The same is not true for the drilled holes – none of them have burrs or any irregularities on either side of the gauge.Otherwise, the gauge is effective at its job. It helps you identify the size of a wood screw, and in trying it out against known sizes, it was accurate. The printing is clear and sharp, and the rulers on the size are handy to be able to measure the length of a screw. What’s especially useful about it, and the reason I bought it, is that it also shows you the right drill bit you should use to create the pilot hole for a given wood screw size. Now I guess there are tables for that, but where this gauge shines is in being able to take a wood screw from your “stash” and within seconds identify it, and know which drill bit to use for the pilot hole.I struggled with whether to take off a star for the rough edges, and decided not to. The utility of the gauge is good enough that this can be overlooked. As far as value for money, some quick comparison shopping turns up similar products for less money. It’s impossible to tell if they’re of the same solid construction, but I wouldn’t classify this one as “value for money”, I’d say it’s more of a premium product.

This item does exactly what it is described to do. It allows you to measure drill bits. It is good quality and seems durable enough to last for quite a long time. Great tool to have around the shop.

The stainless steel of the "pro" model is worth the small price premium, since it'll hold up long-term to use. The laser etched lettering was clear and large enough to read even for my old eyes. I also liked that different drill diameters are given for hardwoods vs softwoods -- something I hadn't really considered when I had simply eye-balled the drill diameter in the past.Minor downsides: the edges felt a bit rough and could have benefitted from a quick deburring. The package also came with tiny standoffs that almost got throw away with the packaging. The standoffs will scratch your workbench if you use them, so perhaps it would be better to toss them out and use stick-on rubber pads if you plan to use this on a bench or table.

Finally, a guide for determining the correct wood screw size, and selecting the correct pilot drill.Where has this been all my life? I have accumulated several coffee cans of assorted wood screws over my lifetime, and finding and matching a set of them for a project has always been difficult, but worse now as my eyesight isn't what it used to be. This guide really helps. There's not much to say about it. It's a piece of stainless steel plate with four standoffs that act as feet to elevate it off the workbench. Please have a look at the photos. The printing is clear and sharp. In addition to sizing screws and choosing the appropriate pilot drill bit for hard or soft wood, it tells what size countersink to use. Conveniently, it shows fractional, decimal and number bit sizes. My only concern has nothing to do with the product, but the cost. It isn't cheap. Then again, this is no doubt not a high volume piece of mass produced merchandise sold by the millions. In the end, I'd rather pay up for quality than get a bargain tool that makes me miserable every time I have to use it.

Right out of the box I knew this is exactly what I wanted. It looks like the ones used for display the hardware store, but it's heavyweight. It's perfect to be honest. I was able to see it went to a variety of sizes from #0-#24 along with all the fractional inch sizes. It's wonderful. I love how the Founder even left a feedback card, which is great. The editing on the blue coating top is perfect and it comes with mounting hardware. I couldn't be any happier with it.
