How To Plant Creeping Thyme:
- Hardiness zone: Creeping thyme grows best in USDA hardiness zones 4 through 9.
- Soil pH: Creeping thyme does best in soil that is either neutral or slightly alkaline.
- The key requirement for creeping thyme is a well-draining soil. This plant is susceptible to root rot, so avoid planting it in heavy clay soil. It does well in well-draining loamy soil.
- Spacing: Plant creeping thyme seeds one inch apart. Once seedlings form, transfer the new plants to their final spot, spacing them 8-12 in apart.
- Note1: Creeping thyme thrives in full sun, though it can also do well in partial shade.
- Note2: Creeping thyme is drought-tolerant. Water new plants regularly until they are established, but avoid letting the plants sit in standing water or they will succumb to root rot.

Planting Steps for Creeping Thyme
Choose the Right Location
Creeping thyme thrives in full sun. Select a spot in your garden that receives at least 6 - 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. It also prefers well - drained soil. If your soil is heavy or clay - like, consider adding sand or organic matter to improve drainage.
Prepare the Soil
Clear the area of any weeds, rocks, or debris. Loosen the soil to a depth of about 6 - 8 inches using a garden fork or tiller. Incorporate a thin layer of compost or well - rotted manure into the soil to enrich it. Rake the soil smooth.
Planting Seeds
Creeping thyme seeds are tiny. Sow them directly on the soil surface, sprinkling them evenly. Lightly press the seeds into the soil, but do not cover them deeply as they need light to germinate. You can also mix the seeds with sand to help with even distribution.
Watering
After planting, water the area gently but thoroughly. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the germination period (for seeds) or the establishment phase (for transplants). Once established, creeping thyme is drought - tolerant and only needs occasional watering, especially during long dry spells.
Maintenance
Weeding: Keep an eye out for weeds and remove them promptly, as they can compete with creeping thyme for nutrients and space. Pruning: In early spring or after flowering, you can give the creeping thyme a light trim to keep it neat and encourage bushier growth.
