These pen/pencil holders would be a cute gift for teachers, as a gift exchange for students in kindergarten or elementary school, or even just as a conversation piece for anyone.The measurements in the product description are correct for the overall dimensions with the lid on. When the lid is removed, the holder part has a scalloped edge. The height without the lid is 4 7/8" at the highest point, and 4 3/8" at the lowest point. The lid will fit when using standard size pens, but will not with new pencils. I was actually surprised that it holds quite a few items - pens, pencils, highlighters, scissors, etc.I'm using one as a conversation piece. It's holding all of the above mentioned items, but keeping it in a place that is out of the way as it will tip over easily, even full, if it's hit near the top of the holder. It's made of a durable plastic, so not worried about it breaking.
