Whoever put the water pump I had on my 2004 Scion used some sealant together with the stock paper gasket. Hence the leak. At first I wanted to just replace the paper gasket but because I used the shortcut method (crowbar pressing out of just enough space to wiggle the pump through the bottom)putting the paper gasket without tearing it proved so difficult that I got the metal one instead. All dry now.
