Six Control Axes

The CH Eclipse Yoke features six 10-bit axes of control for aileron, elevator, throttle, propeller pitch, fuel mixture, and rudder control. An 8-way POV hat and rocker switch on both left and right side of grip is convenient for both left-handed and right-handed players. The trim/scroll wheels with center push function are programmable. Other controls include a three-color LED selector dial, two backlit push buttons and a third traditional push button, two 2-way flipper switches on the base, two traditional push buttons on the backside of each grip, and colored handles for throttle/prop/mixture.

Durable Construction

The CH Eclipse Yoke is built to last. The large, sturdy mounting base comes with adjustable clamps for desks 3/4" to 2-1/4" thick and holds up to years of playing use. The contoured yoke handles feature easy-to-reach buttons, comfortably placed for extended use.

This worked fine when I first got it, but went out of whack at some point and I felt something broken internally. The yoke would no longer stay centered and had a gritty/stiff feel to it. Unfortunately, I had to throw this expensive yoke in the garbage. It fit the bill for my needs too. Rudders on the yoke itself are good in theory but horrible in execution. The throttle controls were okay though. I had to get a HOTAS setup to be able to use flight sims again but if I ever get another yoke, I'll steer clear of CH Products.

I love to fly on MS Flight Simulator and this set-up is very easy to use and really complments the simulator. Well worth the money.

First off, I love that this yoke was assembled (made) in the USA. I also really like that it included several buttons so I could map commonly used flight controls to the yoke. The yoke was plug-in-play. I used both a Mac and a PC and I didn't have to install any pesky drivers. My only complaint would be that CH uses large springs inside this yoke to give it resistance and keep it centered. Often times while making turns I would hear the springs clink-n-clank. It was loud enough for me to return it and wait a few more years for something different. If it weren't a necessity I would keep it because it was super easy to use and really improved my flying experience.

I would rate this much lower if it was made in China, but as one of very few American products I am patiently waiting to see what the 3rd time brings. First time I bought this product was through Ebay, luckily the seller falsly said the product was new. So this Time I ordered it new from Amazon, received an unblimished unopen package just to discover the same problem. Now I am waiting as Amazon sends me another one in exchange for the defective one. The problem I encountered is in the control levers, the board cracks on the 90 degree potentiometer, because of a design flaw. Hopefully I will encounter one that is not so cursed. Will rewrite when I am able to test it....

I bought this to help out learning how to fly. The yoke as a whole feels very solid and well made. The tension is pretty close to the real thing and it centers pretty good too. I plugged it into a USB port of my Win 7 64 bit machine and it installed instantly. Typed "Game controller" into the search bar under the start menu and ran the Game controller setup wizard to make sure the buttons worked, which they did. Now for the bad parts. The clamps that mount to the desk are not that great. They use two long screws with a piece of plastic. While pulling the yoke back, it actually flexes off my desk. Not a huge deal breaker. One of the long screws on my yoke only screws in about a half inch then gets stuck while the other one goes completely in. I have to use a block of wood to make it work. Not worth the hassle of returning it in my opinion but what does bother me is that there is no "contact seller" button. The second reason why I took a star off is because the included software requires Microsoft Flight simulator and it's more of a fine print thing. I assumed the including software would be a cheap gimmick flight sim.Flying with this yoke is ALOT better than with a mouse or generic joy stick. I was hesitant to drop $130 on a controller but this is well worth it considering flying hours are much more expensive. I was able to fly with MS Flight simulator and it felt pretty natural out of the box. The little rudder pedals are kinda cool, but I wasn't able to really use them since I keep one hand on the throttle - mainly to help hold the yoke down while pulling back on it. Out side of flight simulators, I was able to play some old videos games with it. Particulartly Zone of the Enders 2 which is even more fun a yoke. I hopefully get to test this with xplane 9 today. Despite the little hiccups with this yoke, I think I will be getting a CH yoke soon.

I've spent a few hours flight testing the Eclipse Yoke, and here are my impressions:* It strikes me as sturdy and well-made. The housing, yoke, and shaft are constructed from a heavy-duty plastic that is light-weight but strong. It feels like a quality product and not a cheap, plastic toy.* The pitch and roll action are smooth and fluid with just enough resistance to keep it in place while remaining easy to operate with one hand. The rudder paddles and throttle quadrant feature similarly smooth operation with no stickiness or binding. Speaking of rudder paddles, these are a great addition and allow you to put together a minimalist and relatively inexpensive virtual cockpit since you don't have to worry about the added expense of separate rudder pedals.* The overall quality is further evident in the various buttons, dials, and switches which are firm with nice tactile feedback. There are a substantial number of controls available at your fingertips without drivers and up to a staggering 240 individual commands if you install the CH Products profile software (which I did not, partly because I don't know what I would do with that many options, but mostly because the software is not available for Linux).* The clamping system is well-designed with the bolts screwing flush into the housing allowing for low-profile installation. Once secured, it is held firmly in place with no danger of slipping or suddenly coming loose.I tested the Eclipse Yoke in X-Plane 10 and was extremely pleased with how it felt and operated. Once I had the input settings configured to my liking, I found that flying with the Eclipse felt very smooth and natural compared to a joystick, and with the number of controls available, I was able to map my most commonly used commands to the yoke itself meaning less time spent with my fingers on the keyboard which lends itself to a more authentic flying experience (or what I think is a more authentic flying experience; the closest I've come to piloting a real plane was riding as a passenger in the right seat of a Cessna 152).The Eclipse Yoke works flawlessly in Linux (Kubuntu 11.10), but you'll probably want to use a program like QJoyPad to map the left hatswitch to keyboard inputs so you can use it for things like looking around the 3D cockpit. Without QJoyPad, the left hatswitch reports as axes instead of buttons for reasons that are complicated and boring, and you can't assign look commands to an axis in X-Plane making work-arounds pretty much mandatory. Windows doesn't require any such work-around, again for reasons that are complicated and boring. (Update 8-13-2012: As of version 10.10, the Linux version of X-Plane now recognizes hatswitches as button presses, so third-party mapping software is no longer needed.)The center knob on the Eclipse is used by the CH software to select one of three profiles. However, without the software they're reported as regular button presses which can be assigned commands. So, for example, I have X-Plane 10 set-up so that turning the switch all the way to the left will show me the 3D cockpit view, center will give me an exterior view of my plane, and full right will put me in the nearest tower. Pretty handy, I think.I don't have anything negative to say because, honestly, nothing came to mind while I was using the yoke. I booted up X-Plane, took to the air, and never once had to think about the controller sitting in front of me. It just works, feels great to fly with, and doesn't get in the way. I highly recommend the CH Eclipse Yoke to any virtual pilots who are looking to take their experience up a notch.
