I was a little worried that the tool would not align the cams correctly. I read other reviews and decided to give it a try. To put my mind at ease I put the bridge across the head and inserted the pins into the cams one at a time. They fit perfectly. The case and foam insert are very nice, the tools look to be very good quality and they functioned properly. I rebuilt the VANOS system and used these tools to realign everything. The car has been running perfectly now for 6 months.

I read a few mixed reviews on this product before buying. I can tell you first hand that this is a good product. It a pretty simple tool overall and would be pretty hard to mess up the manufacturing of it. What I suspect is the users that gave poor reviews have no idea how to appropriately time the vanos. Overall a very solid and inexpensive option for timing an S54 in my experience.

Compared to factory timing bridge, this tool is not accurate. How do I know? I have both. I posted a detailed comparison on YT, I’m sure if you search you can find it - it’s 13:22 long I believe. If you don’t wanna watch the video, my conclusion is the solid dark red tool w/ the fixed pin is useless, as it hits the rocker arm retainers, the chrome/red tool is not accurate enough for me to trust - but will get you in the ballpark. I dunno why they made the useless solid dark red tool the way they did. One side hits the rocker arm retainer & the other doesn’t. It’s a fixed tool for a single engine. They could have easily made it correctly with more space. And for the complete truth, BMW makes a version of that tool & that is mostly useless as well. The difference between the 2 tools is the pin is “fixed” in the sold red tool. I’m going to guess BMW made their version of this tool as to not risk the pin fall out into an engine or on the floor to be damaged, but even the BMW version of this tool is considered not as accurate as the one with removable pins & unnecessary for home use.The chrome tool is the “setting” tool & the solid red tool is the “checking tool”. The “setting” tool can be used for either - just don’t drop the pins. Also, the chrome tool in this kit comes with 2 pins & you will have no use for 2’pins unless you loose or damage one. You are not supposed to have a pin in each camshaft at any point. The BMW tool is not made to have 2 pins in it at any time. You can force it, but you are damaging the tool.Vanos wil compensate for timing a hair off. How much off exactly until you have problems or a piston hits a valve? I don’t think anyone knows precisely. Compared to a brand new BMW tool as a reference, this tool says my cams would be out of time > 0.5mm, which is measured where the tool rests on the head. Just by eyeballing it I can see that - I don’t need to measure. On the other hand, many have used this tool & have been fine. I believe if you take your time & use it, you can get cam timing close enough to not have an issue, but unless you are extremely familiar with this engine & timing cams on it - it’s next to impossible to judge at what point the tool is showing its innacuracy or if your cams are out of time.Add in timing chain slop, chain guide wear, factory tolerances, stacked tolerances, & human error I would not recommend this tool or kit, unless you are buying it to get the spacers, socket, & crank lock pin & maybe using the bridge as a backup.

I was advised to only use the BMW tool but this tool worked. I didn't know when to use the red bridge until I saw the BMW documentation because every youtube video I saw only showed the the tool that has a removable pin. I think the red bridge in this kit is more accurate than the bridge with removable pins for the final measurement because the pins to not allow movement. Notice the different tools in the attached images. I recommend this tool.

Worked great for timing my E46 M3. Allot of people say only use the OEM timing tools but this set was very good quality and the car ran great after upgrading the VANOS

I have a 2005 E46 M3 and this tool was way cheaper then the one one other sites, the quality is great and everything included works great! Timing was perfect on my E46 M3 I was able to replace all the chain guides with this tool. I would recommend buying this tool instead of buying the expensive ones on other sites that dont even come with all special tools this one comes with.

When I bought this set, the timing bar for the camshaft was off. I timed my engine twice properly and the exhaust kept being over advanced. I went to the dealer and got the BMW timing tool because I was sick of doing everything right and something being wrong. After another $170, the engine timed perfectly and I didn't have another issue. I wouldn't recommend this product because this could definitely destroy your valves.
