I purchased this for my godson for his graduation as a keepsake only. It did not seem as though the compass was actually functioning--it turned, but did not seem to point True North. I am not positive though, as I really was more concerned with the appearance. It is very nicely made! Sometimes, it's difficult to know what to get a guy, and I think this was a fitting, nice gift. The engraving on the wood was good, and it came in a nice, easy box to wrap.
