Your cart is empty. The Lee Precision Breech Lock Challenger Press is an "O" frame press. The "O" frame press by design is the strongest and by far the most popular style press. The larger than average opening allows for maximum hand clearance. The spent primer catcher is positive and allows you to route the spent primers directly to the trash can. Priming is a dream with the Lee Lever Prime System. Best of all, it includes the Breech Lock Quick Change die system. Change dies instantly with a twist of the wrist, and you never have to re-adjust your die.

Wanted to get back into reloading but single stage only and keep the expenses down. This press along with the small pistol die sets I wanted were very reasonably priced.

I purchased this press specifically to use with a collet-type bullet puller. I have a Lyman Mag-Turret press with all of the stations set-up on two turrets for 4 different caliber handguns. I did not want to remove a set up die to remove one or two bullets then go though the setup process again. I have been using a kinetic puller but it is messy and the tip of the hammer is starting to wear out. I started looking for a low cost press that I could use with a collet bullet puller. RCBS, Redding and other single stage presses are too expensive (in my estimation) to use for as a dedicated bullet puller. I know that Lee make reasonably good quality presses at fair prices. I originally ordered a “C” type Lee press from Amazon, but it would not arrive until August. So I cancelled that order and purchased the Lee “Challenger” press. In many ways it is a cross between the RCBS Partner and RCBS Reloader 5 presses. It has some unique features that cut manufacturing cost yet add some additional utility to the press. In particular the way the handle mounts to the press is somewhat unique. The press handle is set into a square block (width & height) that has a hole on one side for the handle arm while the other end is tapped through the end for a retaining bolt. So as you tighten down the retaining bolt it “pulls” the handle rod against the rotating mechanism of the press holding the arm in place with friction. But the real neat thing is the rotating mechanism, which the square block fits into. It’s cut with a series of groves to slide the block into. It allows one select, which set of groves to slide the block into and customize the angle of the pull arm. Never seen anything like this on other presses. Another unique feature is the aperture for mounting the die(s). It has a special insert that the die screws into and the insert is set into the press. There is a notch on the insert, which has to be lined up with a button on the top of the press. Once the die/insert is set in the proper position, all one has to do is press the button down and pull the die/insert out. If one wants to use the die again just press the die/insert back into the press, no need to re-setup the die. Of course one would have to buy additional inserts, but the concept alleviates to re-setup the die each time it’s removed. The primer catcher seemed to be somewhat cheap in that it is nothing more than a clear plastic hose with a push on cap at one end. The spent primer, falls through a side hole in the ram into a “catch basin” there is a hole in the bottom of the catch basin, which the plastic hose is inserted. While a cheap solution, the beauty of it is, one can go to a hardware store and buy a new section of hose real cheap. If one misplaces or tears up the end cap, a wooden dowel piece can be used a plug. The press comes with two primer feeders. There are no primer tubes or auto primer loading apparatus. Simply place the small or larger primer arms into a grove on the press ram and manually insert one primer at a time. Obviously this is not intended for volume primer loading, but more than adequate for small volume reloading applications. Overall fit and finish is most adequate and fully functional for its intended purpose. One issue I did find was, my Lyman bullet insert will not fit in the ram. Although they are nearly identical to the Lee Universal inserts, they are a fraction of a millimeter bigger. Luckily I have both so it was not a big issue for me but could be for some folks. This is a darn good press for someone starting out or on a tight budget. I gave this press 4 stars (really more like 4 ½ stars) because you either have to buy more inserts or take the die out of the single insert included with the die and re-set it up each time. Dies cannot be installed directly into the press. Also the issue with bullet inserts could be an additional expense for some folks.

For a single stage reloading press, I'm not sure you could do much better than this. It's well built, highly affordable, and looks good too. It comes with priming arms for large and small primers and a primer pickup tube for when you deprime your brass. The arm is adjustable to either side and adjustable for length. The half-turn "breech lock quick change" is nice - set your dies and then leave them. The breech locks are a little pricey (between $7-11 depending on where you buy them), but if you're reloading multiple calibers it's well worth the time savings. You only get one breech lock in the box, so you can leave it in the press and screw your dies in / out in the traditional manner if that's your preference. All the materials seem to be well made and heavy duty. I've deprimed a couple hundred rounds ranging from 9mm to 30-06 (using the Lee universal deprimer, a great tool) and I've reloaded a few dozen .308 rounds. My finished ammunition has come out within 3/100s tolerance, which may be due to ammo / case / whatever differences - all I know is the Lee works well and has kept me going.I use the Lee dies, but only because they seem to be the cheapest option with great reviews. I know you can use a slew of other manufacturer's dies on this press, too.It doesn't come with mounting hardware, so you'll need to provide your own. It does have screw mounts on the top for using the Lee quick-prime device, which is an awesome addition. All in all, I am very happy and look forward to reloading countless more rounds with this tool.
