There is no 3-D effect. The whole paper swells up like a sponge.

These are fun. They are basically dehydrated sponges. You draw on them in marker, then drip water on them so the sponge pops up. My daughter enjoyed doing it and its not messy at all, so these would be great for traveling too! Free of odors as well :) Would also be great as a classroom activity or when having kids over at your house.

I was hoping to use these with my nieces, but I am an artist, and I was unable to create a passable end product. The whole concept is just weird. First of all, no instructions were included, so I did what seemed to make sense. I used the included markers (which apply more like regular markers than the acrylic paint pens they claim to be) to draw on the foam sheets, then used the included water brushes to try to raise the texture on the foam. Well, it does puff them up, but not with any precision. You basically end up with what looks like a kitchen sponge with some parts raised, some parts not, with a crookedly painted design. You are supposed to hang this misshapen sponge with the included chain, but I didn't bother. I tried just soaking the entire sponge with water to see if I could get a better look. That did straighten out the artwork a little, but the paint is not waterproof, so it ran a bit. I will keep the sponges to make cut out stamps and let my nieces color with the markers on other projects.
