Thin wall construction allows use without removal of cones and locknuts. The 1" hexagonal base can be used in conjunction with a socket, wrench, or bench vise. PARK TOOL: YOUR GUIDE TO THE WORLD OF CASSETTES & FREEWHEELS

Freewheel with arrow denoting counterclockwise rotation

CASSETTE OR FREEWHEEL?

To determine the type of rear sprocket system you have, find the tool fitting on the sprocket set. Spin the sprockets backwards. If the fitting spins with the cogs, it is a cassette system. If the tool fitting does not spin with the cogs, it is a freewheel system.

4-notch freewheel

COUNT THE NOTCHES

To determine the type of freewheel tool needed, count the number of splines or notches and measure the outside diameter in the tool fitting. If there are 4 notches and the tool fitting is roughly 32mm across, the FR-8 is the correct tool.

THE RIGHT TOOLS FOR THE JOB

In addition to the correct tool, you will also need a method of driving it such as the Park Tool FRW-1 wrench, an adjustable wrench, or a 1" socket.

Park Tool makes a full line of cassette lockring and freewheel tools to empower you to remove the rear cogs of virtually any bicycle. Here's a selection of tools similar to the FR-8:

This four-notch (32 mm) freewheel tool removed a cassette wound tightly onto its threaded hub. Took a long extender bar to dislodge it, however, ultimately the sprockets rotated counter-clockwise and off without damage to either tool or freewheel.

The walls connecting all four nubs/keys should have been machined out. The four nubs/keys cant fit into the freewheel because of this. Compare this with the F6 and see how the F6 only has the four nubs sticking up. This should have been the same. I cant even use this.

Works perfectly, be careful to make sure you order the correct one as BMX's have two fitments.

Durable, high quality tool. Considering that it came from the UK, it arrived much sooner than what Amazon anticipated, and what I thought as well.

This tool didn't fit my freewheel, and I had to widen the notches of the freewheel with a dremel to get it to fit. I think this was probably just a cheap freewheel problem tho - hence the 4 stars - considering the quality that park tools are known for. I did have to end up using and impact gun to remove the modified freewheel and the tool still looks in perfect shape.

I have not used it yet, but it it is the proper size for the freewheel on my flip-flop hub. Great to have the tool on hand if needed.

i have got an older bmx with 1/8'' 16T freewheel and this was way too small. lower than stellar review b/c it says "BMX freewheel removal". apparently BMX has more than one size. this was probably my own lack of knowledge. nothing against the manufacturer or seller, i just rolled the dice on this one and lost. no clue which "FR-#" i needed, but i can confirm for sure it isn't FR-8.maybe i'll try FR-6 now... but that's only a guess too, that the lower the FR-number the larger the diameter (which makes total sense... not)update 4/2 - yeah FR-6 fits. old school mid-90's GT Performer 20" if you're looking for a gauge

As is now noted in the description, this is the freewheel remover tool for BMX hubs with 30 x 1mm threads only.If you have a single speed with a BMX freewheel with 1.37x24 threads like my Schwinn single-speed/fixed gear flip-flopper, then you probably want a Park FR-6 Remover tool.Park tools are top quality and this is no exception. The package has instructions for how to use this to get your freewheel off, which can be tricky because the chain tightens the free wheel as you ride.
