First a disclosure: I do not sail. I ordered this as a gift for someone who does. But as a person who is very knowledgeable in mechanical things, I feel competent to review this Touri brand Sailboat Rigging Tension Gauge, Model PT-1M, because tension is tension, whether it is on a sailboat's rigging, or the parking brake cable on your car.The very thorough user manual that comes with the gauge says accuracy is plus or minus 3% at mid-range. This statement proves the designer has superior knowledge, as no gauge is accurate to the same degree across its entire range. This is true of a pressure gauge on a nuclear reactor, and your bathroom scale. Higher quality improves accuracy, but 100% across the entire range is simply not possible. While accuracy is important, even more important is repeatability. Consistent measurements that are 10% off are better than measurements that are all over the map. Consistency is achieved by competent design, and using quality parts that are assembled well, according to industry standards. The Touri tension gauge is clearly well designed and made to high standards. The base plate is quite ridged and non-magnetic. The gauge is approximately 10-3/4-inches X 5-1/4-inches.The user manual is where this tool shines. There is a lot of information including tension charts in both Metric and Imperial. I would consider either having the whole thing laminated, or photo copying the part that's relevant to your boat, and having that laminated. The gauge is well thought out and well made.

This gauge has 3 gaps on one edge to help you determine which size wire you are measuring to use in the handy tension chart. I have been helping some friends restore wooden sailboats for a few years now and have just "plucked" the shrouds and stays to determine their correct tension. I was always a bit apprehensive about over torquing them because the stress it might put on their wooden spars/masts. This gauge has shown me we can put a few more turns on the turnbuckles. We didn't see the leeward shroud flapping and bouncing around, but it did have a bit of a bow in it on a beam reach. I have used this on my Tanzer 33 as well. If for no other reason, this tool is helpful to maintain consistent and balanced tuning from the port to starboard sides. I don't race anymore, but can see how this would be useful to try and squeak out that extra tenth of a knot. It is well made and will join my toolkit onboard. I already have a few folks on the docks who are going to borrow it and I am not worried about it standing up to regular use, as long as no one drops it it over the side. :-)
