Things like desk lamps use a weighted base for a reason -- to keep from tipping. All of the reasonably priced lab stands I found use a u-shaped metal plate instead of a cast iron base, which can be purchased separately, but is in my opinion expensive for what it is, a simple hunk of cast iron. So I taped the base off using masking tape, and filled it with some concrete we had for patching. Concrete is less dense, & so is lighter than cast iron, but it's still pretty heavy, making the stand much more stable. This stand didn't come with any tabletop protection -- just bare metal -- but after the concrete dried I used a hot glue gun to attach plastic cut from an old flexible cutting board to the bottom and stuck non-slip feet on that.

They work fine but if you intend to hold a lot of weight you can drill a few holes and mount it to a larger base and this becomes worth a lot more.
