  • What is the White Lightning Chain Johnny? It's a simple-to-use bicycle chain and drive train cover that goes on your bike’s drive train in less than a minute.
  • Keeps grease and grime from your bike chain and derailleurs away from stuff you want to keep clean, like your car’s interior, your person, and your clothing.
  • Getting to races or taking your bike on vacation means transporting it. Whether you load your bike inside your car or put it on a rack, protect your investments with the White Lightning Chain Johnny bicycle chain cover.
  • The Chain Johnny has been tested by professional bike riders whose bikes travel thousands of miles each year.

The new White Lightning Chain Sleeve solves the problem of how to transport bikes without making a mess. Anyone who has ever loaded a bicycle into their car probably has battle scars on their upholstery: a tear from a sharp gear or a messy grease stain. Now, White Lightning’s cover protects both rides—the vehicle’s interior and the bicycle’s drivetrain. The Chain Sleeve uses a rip-resistant, 2-ply rubber/nylon material which protects the inside of a car much better than old-school methods such as towels or rags. It is also water resistant to protect the drivetrain itself when transporting bicycles on vehicle-mounted bike racks or storing them in the garage during the winter. Apartment and college dorm dwellers are also using the Chain Sleeve to shield their greasy chains when storing their bikes indoors. The Chain Sleeve’s unique drivetrain shape and VELCRO® closures make installation a no-brainer. Simply slip the Chain Sleeve over the front gear, then the chain and finally the rear derailleur. Seal it all up using the Chain Sleeve’s Velcro closures. The Chain Sleeve is also sold under the name Chain Johnny.

So... I have a salsa mukluk deore Fat bike, it is single 30tooth front chain ring with an 11 speed 11-51 rear cassette. This does cover MOST of my chain. There is two small spots that are still exposed. I got this to keep my chain from collecting dirt while hauling it on the rear truck rack. It seems like it will he much better than nothing. I may try to slide something else in the small gaps. Super easy to use and well built great quality. This does not, at least on mine, cover the rear cassette. The chain has to be on the smallest cog.

Covered most of the chain effectively on a six week road trip. Kept gunk out. Kept bike happy.

Lots of conflicting reviews but I figured I’d give it a try. I ride a 54cm road bike Di2 11 speed. I’m looking for something to basically cover the chain and front rings during transport in the back of a rental car. The cover went on easily with no fussing and covered front rings, chain, rear mech and a few of the small cogs in the rear. It does what I need it to do, no complaints.

It didn't fit... at first. Covered everything except rear derailleur cable which doesn't need a cover I discovered. Changing my rating from a two to a three pending a 4-hour road trip, bike on rear rack. If it prevents road debris into the hardware and remains on at highway speed, I'll change to a five.UPDATE: Changed to a five. The Johnny stayed on the bike at highway speeds while on a rear rack. No visible debris in chain nor cluster. Shifting as normal.

I wish I'd read all of the reviews before wasting my money on the Chain Johnny. It doesn't cover the drive train on any of my bikes! The thing covers the front chain ring and the chain back to the rear cassette, but it's too small to actually cover the rear derailleur and the cassette. The only way I could secure the rear portion was with a bungee cord, so I pitched my Chain Johnny in the trash.

I had recently purchased this after debating awhile on whether I really needed this. I sometimes store my bike inside my truck during trips and was looking for a way to prevent the chain grease marks that sometime occur. This product does solve that and I am fairly satisfied with the product. Downsides - it's not as easy to attach as the instructions and YouTube video show, but I think with some more practice I'll get better at installing the product, however it's design is reasonably good and I would think that a typical person should not have any issue with attaching this within in a minute or two. The only downside I have with this - and it's not a fault of the product it self is that moving the bike in and out of the vehicle can cause the crank to move which then can (for lack of a better way to explain this) twist up the product, but it seems to stay attached as it has a fairly decent amount of Velcro. All an all I would recomend the product.

Not impressed. I have a road bike and mt bike, it does fit better on the road bike so does a little better job of protecting the chain. I travel frequently so my bikes are typically on the back of my car. I like to spend time literally in the middle of nowhere so I travel into national forest which is usually rough, dusty, dirt roads so my bikes end up coated in dust. The dust/dirt actually collects inside the covers. There is no way to completely cover the chains with the covers, which is unfortunate because I think with a little bit of additional material and some simple modifications I think it could do the job. Haven't tested them in the rain yet but I have my doubts that they will be that effective because the velcro closure runs across the top, meaning I would guess that rain will run in. Again, a simple fix, it could have simply had the top be a fold over which would not require any extra material and I believe would be much more effective. I plan to experiment with some extra material and velcro to see if I can get complete coverage then I'll make my own and sell them! ;)

The White Lightning Chain Johnny is a real pleasure to use when I travel with my Montague Navigator folding bike. On Amtrak, I use a soft bag to transport the Navigator, but I like to keep the inside of the bag as clean as possible, so the Chain Johnny really helps keep the bag grease-free.I also will probably use the Chain Johnny instead of the travel bag on day trips when my wife and I will slip the folding bikes into the SUV to reach our departure point. It will be a lot faster than using the bag that completely covers the folding bike.White Lightning as a multiple-paragraph description of the Chain Johnny, one of which states:The Chain Johnny uses a rip-resistant, 2-ply rubber/nylon material which protects the inside of a car much better than old-school methods such as towels or rags. It is also water resistant to protect the drivetrain itself when transporting bicycles on vehicle-mounted bike racks or storing them in the garage during the winter. Apartment and college dorm dwellers are also using the Chain Johnny to shield their greasy chains when storing their bikes indoors.Sometimes I toss in a small ditty bag or two into the bike bag, and I can feel comfortable that it won't come out greased up from the bike's drive train.I'd keep the instructions handy for installation because there are some recommendations for easiest use as to what gears to be in and the steps of installation. The website also has online instructions. I plan to photo the instructions so I'll have them on my smartphone when I travel.

Make no mistake. This product protects things from your chain. IT DOES NOT PROTECT YOUR CHAIN. There are big openings where dust can enter. This product is nearly useless for my needs, as i drive on dusty gravel roads to get to my trails. I regret this purchase.Update: Still using this since I can't find anything better. too protect from dust, I would suggest removing the rear wheel and cover the placing rags under the chain johnny to cover the parts exposed by the large wholes. As soon as I learn to sow, I'm going to make a better chain cover.
