This was a really cute product. Itâs beautifully made, the box is really nice, the engraved message is beautiful, but unfortunately it broke as soon as we got it. The glass on the top came off pretty much immediately, and the needle doesnât stay on, on its own. If it hadnât immediately broken before anyone even used it, it wouldâve been perfect! As far as I can tell itâs accurate when the needle is in place, but I canât give it five stars because obviously it wasnât made very sturdy if it broke as soon as we got it.

Let's be honest who needs a compass in this day and age unless you are in the woods, especially one this nice. This is great for a gift and for my purposes. I have it, along with a sextant as my backdrop for my YouTube videos. This looks great and yes it is functional.

This is an attractive compass with mostly brass fittings, but with a bit of a rose gold tint on the case around the dial. The saying by Thoreau is inspiring. It is a good gift for a guy, I think, or a girl with an independent spirit. At least, it would be a nice gift were it not for an issue I will bring up a bit later. It comes in a nice wooden box with a little hook latch and red velvet lining. On top of the wooden box is an embossed brass anchor. It would all be very impressive, except that on the inside cover of the box, there are some sort of water, rust, or other spots. A light scrubbing does not remove these spots from the brass plate. The legend is the same as on the back of the compass: the nice quote from Thoreau. Honestly, though, would you give this as a gift to anyone, used-looking as it is? It looks like it has already been on a camping trip in the rain or in a storm at seas. The presentation box is part of the gift. The wooden box protects the instrument. Ugly splotches shouldn't be ignored. As it is, I would not present anyone with this box, and the presence of spots makes me wonder if the rest of the metal, including on the compass itself, is going to deteriorate like that.
