Product Description

Why Use Leg Length Shims?

Leg Length Shims (LL Shims) are used to compensate for leg length discrepancies (one leg is shorter than the other). Our LL Shims are made of high-density plastic to conform to the curve of the sole of the shoe. The SPD, Universal and Look Keo LL Shims are 3 mm thick while Speedplay's LL Shims are 3.5 mm thick.

The 3mm shim isn’t durable enough to hold up to the pedal sliding on it to engage the cleat. It needs to be made out of nylon maybe with a metal skid or something.

I have a 9mm shorter left leg and a weak right knee that gave me pain, and would limit my max cadence and power. Using the 3mm shim on my left leg resulted in significant perceived improvements which reduced pain and increased my performance. i.e. (1) even pecieved peddling balance with less hip movement and ease of performing higher cadence on the bike (2) even percieved torque balance between right/left leg and with drastic reduction of my knee pain. (3) overall performance improvement . (4) note that i also used the wedges so it may have also contributed to the positive results. in either case i would highly recomend bike fit and/or medical professional.PS: the longer SPD screws provided wear constantly getting loose and i had to re-torque each time using torque wrench), till the screw-head actually broke off. I suspect production quality as the screw head taper was very thin. I bougth another set of screws from local specialized hardware store and no problem since then.

Due to multiple injuries & surgeries to my knees (and maybe my genetics) I've ended up with a leg length discrepancy. It's big enough that it makes me compromise on saddle height, too short for my R leg because otherwise it's too tall for my L leg. With this shim on the L foot I get balance and can run a good saddle height. I'm also using Bike Fit's cleat wedges to fix my other genetic flaw of having lower leg alignment that puts me always on my little toe edge. The combination has really smoothed out my pedaling and made 4+ hr rides more comfortable. Some people find they interfere with the pedal's release. I can speak only to using them with Time pedals. I use the shims & cleat wedges under a Crank Bros cleat shield and my Time MX4 pedals have no objections. Shoe/pedal interface works the same as the shoe without cleat weges/shims & CB cleat shields.

Unfortunately this shim has made pedal entry and exit more difficult and the fit on the shimmed foot is not nearly as snug. As a result of trying to clip in multiple times the shim has worn substantially.

I have found these very helpful. HOWEVER, after some time, the shim has begun to wear where my pedal rubs against the shim. I use Crankbrothers pedals.

They perform as intended and are definitely a help if you have leg length differences. Challenge is that the material is a bit soft and can show wear quickly with some cleat designs. Wear is pretty fast with the Crank Brother cleats as the shin rests on the bars of the "clip" mechanism. Probably not an issue at all with SPD pedals where the center portion of the clear takes the load

Didn't know this item was available. I only used the thick large shim. Much better than stacking multiple thin shims as they tend to slip on my carbon sole. As a precautionary measure, I added abit of carbon grease between my carbon sole and the shim itself. Been using it for a season and had not slipped yet. Works well and help eliminate my back pain due to leg length discrepancy. YMMV.

The shim does as you would expect. However I have to constantly tighten the screws because the cleat will swivel. It's to the point where I am literally tightening the bolts as hard as I can in order for the shim/cleat to stay put for a ride. They should texture the side of the shim that comes in contact with the should to keep it from moving.
