I've installed star nuts before without the proper tool. I know it can be done but if you have the money this tool will get it done faster with the star nut perfectly aligned and zero stress.

Worked perfect installing cane creek star nut into 1-1/8" steerer tube. TIP: If you have a suspension fork and set the fork on the floor and try to hammer in the star nut the suspension will absorb the impact from your hammer. I just get the star nut started and then hold the fork in my hand and finish hammering it in, no problem.

Had to replace the star nut on my Amyet ebike due to the bolt breaking off in the star nut. Easily drive the the star nut down/out with a punch and a hammer, and then use this tool for error free installation of the new star nut. I had never done this job before and this made it super simple. I'll probably never use it again but if I do, I know what tool to grab. Almost all ebikes and mountain bikes have the same size stem so this should work for you.
