Finally, a nice and safe gate for BANNISTERS (do not use pressure fit gates at the stairs!). The colour of the wood is super nice and modern. It matches our new home so well. This gate looks much better than the plastic or metal white ones we had at our old home. It is easy to use. It stops my baby getting through, but my 4 year old is able to open it when needed. We bought it as a return for only $64.23 which is a steal (regularly almost $170).

An absolute must if you are using for stairs. Other gates we ordered (not thinking) had a rail at the bottom which made the stairs even more of a tripping hazard for our kids but also the adults. Ended up buying one for the top and bottom. The color is beautiful.

Overall the gate is good quality and cosmetically pleasing. However a crucial component of the stair locking system is missing. Unfortunately without the pin in one of the four mounting brackets the gate cannot be installed.

Pros:- Good non-permanent installation for stairway and clever design.- Relatively easy to remove the gate when not in-use.- Quick installation- Sliding mechanism on this gate is perfect- Easily adjustable to width of stairs- One-way operation for stairsCons:- Needs more color options, neither option was dark- Gate support doesn't help at bottom of stairs / not long enough- Doesn't have a way to adjust the height of the mounting bars in any meaningful way- Does not appear to be intended for installation on slanted railing- Cannot adjust mounting latches once gate is installed- Gate hinge hardware doesn't lock tight- No auto-close / slam close. One Major Flaw - Height of the gate is not really adjustable, the bars don't tighten / slide down the mounting mechanism, if you are anticipating adjusting this, keep that in mind. Luckily my cats can still fit under the gap so it wasn't that big of a problem.Installation took about 20 minutes, the instructions are not that great but anyone with Ikea level knowledge could do this. The gate hardware for mounting the actual gate tends to flop around, that's my only real complaint otherwise it would be a lot easier to remove when not needed.

To mount to a banister your banister must not have any mounding at the base and the two square portions of the banister must be within a certain distance from one another. This was not mentioned in the product description. I have a square banister at the top and bottom and it is cylindrical in between. The distance between my two square portions is too great to work with this product. The included ratcheting straps do not work for the round portion. Additionally, the rod must be touching the floor at as it is allowed to freely slide within the ratcheting straps. Ridiculous design. If I allow my rod to sit on the floor then the top most ratchet strap doesn’t reach the top square portion of my banister. In short, it won’t work on a banister with base molding without screwing into your banister if you have a significant distance between the square portions of your banister. If your banister is round, forget about it. On the the hinge side, if you have a base board you’ll need to use spacers for the top two screws. There are three screw holes but only two spacers are provided. Makes absolutely no sense. So you’ll have to make due with only two screw attachment points to your wall. Finally, no templates of any kind are included. You have to do your own measurements and work backwards to find the appropriate location of where to screw in the hinge rod to your wall so the gate will be level and reach the lock. I purchased these early when the little guy was only a couple of months old. I just took them out to install them now that he is getting ready to walk. Because of this I just passed my return window and now I’m stuck with two of these terrible gates. Do not buy if any of the above applies to you.

I have arthritis in my hands and find it awkward to open and close - no one else in the house has a problem.

I should start this review off with why I gave it three stars. The product itself is fine so long as you receive one that isn't defective – 4 stars. The reason for the three stars comes from having to deal with the Summer Infant Inc. company due to a defective gate. The gate I received was missing the top spring in the handle, without this spring it won't latch securely closed. I thought this is pretty simple, I'll call Summer Infant Inc. and they'll either send the missing 5 cent spring or a new gate. Many companies that manufacture infant safety products are very reasonable with issue like this (Stork Craft for example is great to deal with, they send the defective piece immediately without question and don't even require the defective pieces back). Summer Infant on the other hand has a policy which requires that customers send the defective piece to them first (at customer's cost) before they send a replacement. I explained that this is a top of the stairs safety gate, and while its defective it still kind of works, I cannot risk the chance that my son may accidentally fall down the stairs and seriously hurt himself because of Summer Infant's policy. I told her I'd be happy to send the defective gate back after receiving a replacement. This, however, isn't good enough for Summer Infant. The lady on the phone repeated the policy (many many times I might add), “it's our policy that the defective piece be sent back before we send a replacement.”So in effect Summer Infant is implying that their policy is “we don't care about child safety so long as we receive the replacement parts first.” Of course her manager wasn't available to help resolve the issue so she offered to “take my information so her manager can call me back” - yeah sure. In short Summer Infant's policy PUTS CHILDREN IN DANGER!Hitting a dead end with Summer Infant Inc. I called Amazon.ca and explained the situation to them. They apologized for the defective product and said they'll immediately send a replacement gate. They also provided me with return shipping labels which I'm to use for returning the gate after receiving the replacement – simple! That's all I wanted from Summer Infant but their “we don't care about child safety” policy prevents them from doing so.I have to say Amazon.ca is great. It wasn't their fault that the product was defective, nor should they be responsible to pickup the extra shipping cost because Summer Infant Inc.'s manufacturing is sub-par (gate is made in China of course).Thank you Amazon for resolving this so pleasantly! Shame on you Summer Infant Inc.!I hope this review helps others, I for one will be avoiding Summer Infant products.
