About this item

  • ❄ High resolution: Readings from 0.2 to 5 mg/L, covering most city water chlorination level and different filtration effects of water filters.
  • ❄ High accuracy: The combination of the colorization of the chemical test kit, large sample tube and high-quality color comparison chart gives more accuracy than a testing strip, allowing telling of fine difference.
  • ❄ Complete setup: All required materials are included with the test kit, such as the sample microcentrifuge tube, color comparison chart, and reagent pill and measuring spoon.
  • ❄ Easy to use: Four simple steps allow you to perform the test in less than a minute and get the results in less than three minutes.
  • ❄ High relevance: Total chlorine covers both free chlorine and chloramine. The test kit allows you to measure total chlorine level of source water, determine the filtration effects of your water filters and accuracy of their claims, and make comparison between different water filters. Use it for drinking water, shower water, aquarium, or pool water.

Envig Compare-It total chlorine test kit is a colorimetric chemical test kit that determines the total chlorine concentration within a 0.2 to 5 mg/L (ppm) range. It is supplied with all of the necessary reagents and material to perform the analysis. The test kit is easy to use and has higher accuracy than a test strip. The test kit contains enough reagents to perform 10 tests.

The chlorination of water supplies and polluted waters is used mainly to keep water safe by water authorities. Chlorine has been used traditionally, but more and more water plants now switch to chloramine. Total chlorine covers both free chlorine and chloramine. High amounts of chlorination will produce adverse effects like the formation of compounds that are potentially carcinogenic (e.g. chloroform) or harmful to aquatic life (e.g. chloramines). It is essential to remove chlorination as much as possible at the point of consumption to minimize any adverse effects.

I used this to test my tap water (which I know has chlorine in it), and the water out of my refrigerator filter. The tap water did read some chlorine, but the filtered water was clear. So now I know it's best to use the refrigerator filtered water. You can do up to 10 tests.

I got this to test to see if my pre-filters were removing all of the chlorine and chloramines from my RO/DI water that I use for my reef tank. When I did the test, it came back as clear, showing nothing in the RO/DI water. I then did a test on the tap water, just to make sure that the test wasn't bad. That test came back bright pink! It's nice to have for piece of mind that my RO/DI filter unit is working like it should.

As you can see from the picture of the test tube, I had to be creative to get it to stand up to add the powder as it is rounded on the bottom. The instructions were not making sense to me so I altered them. It called for putting one pill in the tube with the water sample and shaking for 30 seconds. I shook for about 2 minutes until the pill totally dissolved in the water. The rest of the instructions I followed. Here is what I was trying to accomplish. I wanted Ozarka bottled water in our house without us having to purchase it at the store and constantly recycle the empty containers. I ordered the stand and started getting the 5-gallon jugs of water delivered to our house.I was also interested in Ozarka’s (ReadyRefresh's) under the sink filter for the cold tap water. I purchased it and set it up in our kitchen but I had no way of knowing whether it was filtering the water as advertised. It is certified to reduce PFOA/PFOS, and certified to the NSF Standards to reduce lead, chlorine, microplastics, particulates, & cysts. My philosophy is that if it reduced chlorine, there is a good chance it is helping with the rest.As you can see from the picture of the tube laying on the chart sheet, the sample from the bottled water came out clean with NO pink color showing NO chlorine. (As expected.)The next picture that shows the pink color is from our bathroom cold tap water showing about 1ppm of chlorine. (Again, as expected.)The other picture of me holding the tube shows the water is totally chlorine free! That was from the filtered water in our kitchen! This test kit brings up peace of mind that the water filter is working as advertised!

This test is totally worth it if you are concerned about the level of chlorination in your tap water. My town added capacity to the water treatment facility, but lately I learned they actually accommodate maintenance downtime with the added capacity rather than increase the water supply while keeping the treatment process unchanged. Sure enough, the test of tap water shows increased chlorination compared to a few years back, and there is only one explanation: rushing through the process water at volumes they cannot handle properly, so why not make it safe with higher chlorination… One more thing these tests proved useful in: the effectiveness of water filters for my fridge. Just confirmed what I already suspected: those filters are not a good investment if what you are looking for is proper chlorine elimination from tap water.
