This is ten pounds of pure soda ash and comes in an easy-to-store, resealable bag. Soda ash is moderately dangerous because it has a pH level of 11.6. Neutral is 7.0, while lye and household bleach have a pH level of 13 (very ‘basic’). So soda ash is almost as basic as bleach and therefore will burn skin and eyes. This can change your alkalinity and pH, which are related. pH measures how acidic or basic water is, while alkalinity indicates the water's ability to resist changes in pH. Sodium carbonate (soda ash) is most effective for raising pH levels (making the water more basic) while only minimally raising alkalinity. It’s stronger than sodium bicarbonate (baking soda, pH 8.3), which is more commonly used for routine adjustments. Soda ash is what you want for fast increases to your pH.I fill a bucket about halfway with pool water, then add as much soda ash as I need. I slowly mix it with a large wooden paint stirrer until it’s dissolved and pour it around the perimeter of the pool. Do not pour it in the skimmer, or it’ll be useless, and never add water to chemicals; always add chemicals to water. This is good stuff, and I’ll buy it again if the price remains competitive.I hope this helps.
