Works. Had doubts, tested it, but it does work. Love the casing it is in too. Only downside is it doesnt glow in the dark.

This brushed brass solver keychain compass is a lot like the one my grandpa gave me when I was a little kid. Rather than using a stick-styled compass needle, this one uses a magnetic disk. It points towards magnetic north as it should. What I really like about this compass are the color scheme, and the texture. That’s right, the TEXTURE. The engravings on it make it very fun to touch and fidget with. I think this will be a great gift from me to my son on Father’s Day.

This is beautiful little piece of kit. I live in a very rural area, and while I never get so lost I'd need to resort to a compass, it's not impossible that such a thing could happen upon one of our many adventure walks around the property. Built like an old pocket watch, this model is everything it needs to be: Simple and classy. Mine came emblazoned with a graphic of New York state and the Statue of Liberty on the case plate, along with the year NY was inducted into the Union (1788, btw) and the motto: "Gateway to freedom." Now, I've only ever seen New York from the relative safety of Newark International Airport, but I was more taken with the style of this item than every facet of its substance. As I said, this is a classy little compass. Sure, it doesn't have a magnifier/fire starter bit, but I also think that the kind of people who need their compass to double as a survival knife/kit probably won't give this beauty a second glance. Their loss, I say.To give an idea of scale, the compass is about the exact diameter of equally antique/obsolete silver dollar, which is to say about 1.5"-2." It's probably in the seller's specs, so I'm not going to belabor the point. The fob (little ringlet on the top) houses a small button which opens the case plate to reveal the compass within, identical to inexpensive pocket watches I've owned in the past. I haven't gotten a fob chain for mine yet, but it fits quite easily in the fifth--aka WATCH pocket--on my short pants and trousers. Because compasses function on magnetism, relative to the poles, this is kind of a difficult item to get wrong. Just the same, the dial spins smoothly and accurately with no hang or hitches, and rotating in place, the directionals hold very true. Again, I'm not a 17th Century sailor or cartographer or someone who needs to make regular use of a compass, but this is a nice item to have to hand. The bronze finish and scroll work look really nice, and unless you absolutely hate the state of New York, there's nothing not to like about its appearance. I'm going to give this one five stars, y'all.TL; DR Version: Classy compass with pro NY decoration. Small, attractive, accurate and easy to use. Could work well as a decoration or pocket jewelry.

Overall, this is a very nice quality brass compass that seemed to be put together very well. The compass has a bit of weight to it and works as you would expect to compass to. I like the weight and the feel of it and the fact that it has a cover to protect the compass part. Probably my only complaint/comment is that the cover includes the words New York on it as well as a picture of New York State. It would be nice if you could order a version specific to your state or one with a logo such as the BSA logo on it. Otherwise, it's a very cool compass and definitely fun to play with. For the price, it's definitely worth purchasing.5/5 would definitely recommend.

So, this is a very antiquated-looking compass, bringing a nostalgia of classics like Uncharted and Tomb Raider, perhaps a 'lil Indy. Has a Mercator style map on the back and pops open with a push of the pin on top. Certainly nothing to scoff at, lest you don't enjoy getting lost. The compass is just not accurate. Holding the compass in your hand, very still, produces no results. It has to be set down on a flat, non-moving surface to find itself. Which it does half the time. Depending on which direction the needle is moving (clockwise or counter), it is more or less accurate. It is usually off by about 20 degrees, but at times got stuck around 90 degrees, while not holding or touching it.However, the instructions are fun! #4. says "...use soft cloth for daily maintenance. Alcohol is prohibited." Not sure what that's referring to; the use of alcohol on the soft cloth or while using the compass. But I'm pretty sure the compass has had a few too many either way, and should not be designated to get you home safely. Happy travels!

The antique brass and gold finish make this compass visually appealing.
