Orderd the rhino rack for our ocean 2 person kayak to fit on out 2023 Kia sportage. Didn't fit either one properly . Sent it back after 1 use. Don't believe product description about full refund. Cost me $30 for return shipping and $35 "restocking fee" contrary to the"full refund" described at sale.

All right. Who's the joker in the engineering department that spec'd tamper-proof bolts on an assembly that will be hand tightened with a knurl knob? For those that don't know what a tamper-proof bolt is, look in just about any public bathroom stall and the bolts that hold together the stall, usually allen (hex) head that have a center post that keeps somebody from using a standard allen wrench to disassemble the stall (Because evidently that was enough of a thing to necessitate tamper-proof bolts in public bathroom stalls). So, some yahoo at Rhino-Rack decided to use tamper-proof bolts on the clamping mechanism that clamps the rack to your roof-rack. Now, at this point, many of you are thinking "That's GREAT!!! That would keep somebody from stealing my kayak rack." But, the same yahoo at Rhino-Rack decided to use knurl knobs to secure the rack on the bottom of the clamp. Meaning, if somebody wants to steal your rack, they just hand loosen the knurl knobs. Why is is this annoying me to the point of writing this review. Because I could have assembled this within a couple minutes using tools I already have in my garage instead of hand tightening a 4" long bolt with an allen key like I just purchased something from IKEA. And because now I have to keep a damned specialized tamper-proof allen wrench, supplied by Rhino Rack, somewhere in my garage. There's no way I'm not losing it. I've probably already lost it.Rack is fine. I bought a second one. Straps that come with the rack are great. Very high quality.

Seemingly a well made product that ACTUALLY fits unlike the Chinese made J units. Picking up my kayaks tomorrow and will formally review then.

Got two new kayaks and already had a Rhino rack, so got two pairs of Rhino J racks to match. Easy to install and use.

These are a decent alternative to the big names. I do prefer the design of Yakima and had those for a previous vehicle. They seemed a bit more robust and easier to use the straps with. I got these because the big brands didn't have a good system for my Grand Cherokee, so I went with the aero shaped Rhino Rack cross bars to which these carriers attach. These do the job and cosmetically look as good as the others. Its just a little more tricky to wrap the straps around the bases. The Yakima racks have bigger, rounder bases. These pretty much make you wrap the strap around the lower mounting bars and screws, so you either have to fold the strap over length wise at those sections or you wrap them flatly over the mounts, which I suspect would cause premature strap wear.

Build quality is great. I wish it included the bracket to connect right to the channel of the bar.

I read the previous review regarding the poor engineering. I ordered anyway thinking maybe a one off situation. Not so, that review was correct. When you tighten the bottom nut…is loosens the top. And the top rubber piece get destroyed when trying to remove. Not a kayak carrier I would buy again !

The product is made of sturdy materials and looks like it will last through a lot of wear and tear. This fact alone is why I rated it two stars instead of one. However, there is a serious design flaw that affected my installation of one of the J-hooks, and the design is such that it might be impossible to fix.Put simply, installation requires you to attach the two halves of the J-hook to a plate by screwing it in. You then attach a rubber pad to the top of the plate, which protects the kayak and also the hardware itself. However, this top rubber pad is difficult to install and is almost permanent because the way it slots in makes it virtually impossible to remove without damaging. This effects the problems I had later. The assembled unit is then attached to the vehicle with a bracket and some hand screws. This ideally would make the product easy to attach and remove. The problem is that when you turn the hand screws it can also unscrew the bolt from the plate. This happened to me with one of the J-hooks I installed. The threaded piece of metal in the plate you screw into is supposed to stop this with friction. In my case, this part of the design failed and the metal threaded piece actually moved out of the plate. The hand screw now does nothing as turning it either way simply causes the bolt to turn. This means that there is only one side that can be loosened or tightened for this particular J-hook. Worse, due to the rubber top pad preventing me from accessing the top of the bolts it is basically impossible to try and fix it.With a better design it would be a great product.
